What's a healthy hook rate and why does it matter more than I thought?

Hook rate = 3-second video views ÷ impressions. A healthy hook rate is 25-40%+ for most formats. This matters because it's the first diagnostic for creative problems. If hook rate is below 15%, your first 3 seconds aren't stopping the scroll — and everything downstream (ATC, CVR, ROAS) is irrelevant because you're not getting seen. A 30% hook rate with 1% CTR is better diagnosed as a "body didn't deliver on the hook's promise" problem, not a hook problem. Distinguish between hook stopping power and body conversion — they require different fixes.

Tactical FixLow hook rate (below 20%): test 5 completely different opening 3 seconds — different person, different environment, different first line. Good hook rate, low CTR: the problem is in seconds 5-15 — your hook promise needs a faster payoff in the body copy.
