I'm getting sessions from my ads but Shopify shows a much lower number. Which is accurate?

Tracking discrepancy question — common source of confusion and misdiagnosis

Meta and Shopify count "sessions" and "clicks" differently, so some discrepancy is always expected. What matters is understanding which discrepancy is normal and which indicates a problem.

  • Normal discrepancy (10–30%): Meta counts every link click, including people who click but immediately close the tab before your page loads. Shopify only counts sessions where the pixel actually fired on your store. Ad blockers, slow connections, and quick back-presses account for this gap.
  • Concerning discrepancy (50%+ or Shopify showing 0 sessions): Your ad destination URL may be wrong, your Shopify pixel may not be firing, or your store may be loading too slowly for mobile users to trigger a session event before bouncing. Check your ad's destination URL first — copy it directly and open it on your phone.
  • The real number to trust: For conversion rate calculations, use Shopify sessions — those are people who actually loaded your store. For comparing creative performance (which ad got more clicks), use Meta data directionally. For profitability decisions (actual revenue), always use Shopify.
