What are realistic shipping times from Chinese suppliers and how do I handle customer complaints?

Shipping time management — one of the most-cited reasons for chargebacks and complaints

Realistic shipping times from CJ Dropshipping or AliExpress to the US/UK/AU are typically 10–20 business days, depending on the shipping line selected and customs. To a customer used to Amazon Prime, that's an eternity — and if you don't set expectations clearly, it becomes a complaint.

  • Set expectations before purchase: Show shipping timeframe on the product page, in the cart, and in the order confirmation email. "Ships within 2 business days. Delivery typically 10–15 business days" is specific and sets the right frame.
  • The honesty rule: Showing "2–3 week shipping" honestly converts slightly worse than showing nothing — but dramatically reduces chargebacks, disputes, and customer service load. The customers who convert with honest shipping times are better customers. Those who would dispute when they discover the actual time self-select out.
  • Post-purchase communication: An automated email at day 3 ("your order is on its way — here's your tracking number") and day 10 ("your order should arrive within the next 7 days") dramatically reduces "where is my order?" tickets and chargeback rates.
  • When an order is late: Proactively contact customers whose estimated delivery window has passed before they contact you. A proactive "we're checking on your order" message converts a potential chargeback into a loyal customer 70%+ of the time.
