How much money do I actually need to start dropshipping properly?

The real number depends on your testing strategy. Here's the honest breakdown:

  • Absolute minimum (undercapitalized, high risk) — $500–$300 total: Gets you one lean product test ($300–400 in ad spend), Shopify ($1/month trial then $39/month), domain ($12), and 1–2 months of tools. At this budget, a single test failure wipes you out. You have no margin for iteration.
  • Functional minimum (1–2 serious tests) — $1,500–$2,000: Gives you room for 2 product tests ($500–700 each with proper creative volume), basic tools, and a month of Shopify. Most beginners who get their first sale are in this range.
  • Realistic starting budget (5+ tests, proper volume) — $3,000–$5,000: Allows you to test 5–10 products properly, iterate on winners, and build a basic creative library without going broke after 2 failures. This is what operators who hit their first winning product before quitting typically had.

Below $500: don't run paid ads. Start with organic TikTok, build creative skills (see Module 01), and save until you have enough to test properly. Running underfunded paid ads wastes money and teaches you nothing useful.
